Cruz Jr.

The third overall selection in the ’95 draft, Jose, the son of former big leaguer and current Astros coach Jose Cruz Sr., played for eight clubs over a nine-year career. The switch-hitting outfielder hit 204 career homers, winning a Gold Glove with the Giants in 2003. He was the runnerup to Nomar Garciaparra in AL Rookie-of-the-Year balloting in 1997. He became the first Puerto Rico-born player to join the “30-30” club in 2001 when he hit a career-best 34 homers and stole 32 bases for Toronto. Jose was born in Arroyo, Puerto Rico and split time between Arroyo and Houston while growing up. He played college ball for Rice University. He joined the MLBPA staff in February 2013.

Helling

The 22nd overall selection in the ’92 draft out of Stanford University, Rick won 93 games over a 12-year career with the Rangers, Marlins, Orioles, Diamondbacks and Brewers. The North Dakotan pitched for the Marlins’ World Series champion teams in 1997 and 2003 and with 20 wins in 1998 he tied David Cone and Roger Clemens for tops in the AL. Long active in union affairs as a player, Rick joined the MLBPA staff in March 2009.

Mike

Myers

Mike baffled opposing hitters over 13 years in the majors as a submarining left-handed reliever for nine different clubs. Primarily a late-inning specialist who matched up against top left-handed hitters, Mike led the AL in appearances in both 1996 and 1997 for the Tigers and made at least 60 appearances in each of his 12 full seasons. Long active in union affairs and a key member of the Pension Committee, Mike joined the MLBPA staff in March 2009.
