NEW YORK, November 24 – The Players Association mourns the passing of Atlanta Braves legend Rico Carty at the age of 85. Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite.
A member of the Caribbean Baseball, Latino Baseball, and Atlanta Braves Halls of Fame, Carty played 13 major league seasons for Atlanta, Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, and Texas, compiling a .299 career average. In 1970, he made the National League All-Star team and hit .366 to win the batting title. After retiring as a Player in 1980, Carty returned to the Dominican Republic, where he remained an active figure in the community for decades.
The Players Association honors Rico Carty’s pioneering achievements that paved the way for so many Latino Players who followed in his footsteps. We offer our condolences to his family, friends, and many fans.
