Statement from Executive Director Tony Clark

NEW YORK, July 19 – Today, on Rachel Robinson’s 100th birthday, it is an honor to pay tribute to her life and legacy as a pioneer, champion of the voiceless and the marginalized, and the keeper of the flame that is Jackie Robinson. We know Mrs. Robinson as the wife of Jackie; the husband, father, humanitarian, and revolutionary.

What is rarely noted are Rachel Robinson’s own advancements in the field of medicine, social justice, and access to education. These are all accomplishments that she has managed while also protecting and solidifying her husband’s legacy.

As a young and aspiring athlete, I did not fully appreciate the work, the struggle, or the resulting advancements that were earned because of the lives of Rachel and Jackie Robinson.

As a former Major League Player and the Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, it continues to be my mission to recognize and deepen the organization’s partnership and collaboration with the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Mrs. Robinson founded the organization in 1973 to help students of color meet the cost of college and start on the road to a career of their dreams. As we continue to strengthen and expand the partnership between the MLBPA and the Foundation, we are helping to lower the barriers to opportunity that keep so many people of color, in particular, trapped and unable to realize the American Dream.

As a father, husband, and as a Black man who has attempted to stand on the shoulders of giants, I am often reminded of one of Jackie Robinson’s famous quotes: ‘A Life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives.’ These words serve as a daily reminder to stay the course despite all of the systemic forces designed to undermine progress and to have an ongoing focus on ways to make a lasting difference on society.

If Jackie Robinson was our shining star, then Mrs. Rachel Robinson is our North Star, lighting the path forward in a world as turbulent and as uncertain as ever.

In a matter of days, the Jackie Robinson Museum will officially open. Over the years, the Foundation and its partners have worked tirelessly to realize this dream. The museum will be a forum for national dialogue on consequential social issues and innovative educational programming, as well as to celebrate the enduring legacy of Jackie Robinson.

With a full heart, and in humility, I extend my gratitude to Mrs. Rachel Robinson on this milestone and birthday celebration.

NUEVA YORK, 19 de julio – Hoy, en el cumpleaños número 100 de Rachel Robinson, es un honor rendir homenaje a su vida y legado como pionera, defensora de los que no tienen voz y los marginados, y la guardiana de esa llama que es Jackie Robinson. La conocemos como la esposa de Jackie, el esposo, el padre, el humanitario y el revolucionario.

Lo que rara vez se observan son los logros propios de Rachel Robinson en el campo de la medicina, la justicia social y el acceso a la educación. Todos estos son triunfos que ella ha logrado a la vez que protege y solidifica el legado de su esposo.

Cuando era un joven atleta con aspiraciones, no aprecié plenamente la labor, la lucha o el progreso que son fruto de las vidas de Rachel y Jackie Robinson.

Como exjugador y Director Ejecutivo de la Asociación de Peloteros de Grandes Ligas, mi misión continúa siendo reconocer y profundizar la asociación y colaboración de la MLBPA con la Fundación Jackie Robinson. Rachel Robinson fundó la organización en 1973 para ayudar a estudiantes de color a cubrir el costo de la educación superior y comenzar a perseguir la carrera de sus sueños. A medida que seguimos fortaleciendo y ampliando la colaboración entre la MLBPA y la Fundación, estamos ayudando a reducir los obstáculos a las oportunidades que mantienen a tantas personas de color – en particular – atrapadas e incapaces de realizar el Sueño Americano.

Como padre, como esposo y como afroamericano que ha intentado seguir el ejemplo de gigantes, recuerdo a menudo una de las frases famosas de Jackie Robinson: "Una vida no es importante sino por el impacto que tiene en otras vidas". El Museo Jackie Robinson abrirá oficialmente en unos días. A través de los años, la Fundación y sus socios han trabajado incansablemente para hacer este sueño realidad.
